Exotic Fungus

Macrolepiota abruptibulba: an exotic fungus fruiting in the Princess of Wales Conservatory.

Over the past 130 years, many exotic and tropical species of macrofungi have been discovered and described from Kew glasshouses. The latest, fruiting October - November 1997 in the Moist Tropics display area of the Princess of Wales Conservatory, was identified as Macrolepiota abruptibulba, a species recorded only from West and equatorial Africa. A complete illustrated description is in press (Edinburgh Journal of Botany) and dried reference material, with photographs and spore-prints, has been deposited in the national reference collections of the Herbarium.
