The Japanese landscapeAround the Chokushi-Mon, the Japanese landscape
is in three distinct areas, each depicting one of the many different aspects of
Japanese gardens. Overall, it is a dry stone kaiyu shiki (stroll-around) garden
in the Momoyama rococo style of the 16th Century. The main entrance leads
into a 'Garden of Peace', reminiscent of a tea garden (roji), a calming, tranquil
place with stone baths and a gently dripping water basin. The slope to
the south of Chokushi-Mon is a 'Garden of Activity', symbolising the natural grandeur
of waterfalls, hills and the sea. The third area, the 'Garden of Harmony',
links the other two and represents the mountainous regions of Japan, using precisely
positioned stones and rock outcrops, interplanted with a wide variety of plants
of Japanese origin, many of which are well known in the West.
