Orchid Research Newsletter No. 37

Introduction

The new millennium dawns with orchid research in fine fettle. We now have recent accounts of the orchid floras of most of the temperate regions of the world and over half of the tropics. Significant advances have been made in our knowledge of the orchids of the Americas, Europe, tropical and South Africa, Madagascar, China, S and SE Asia, the Malay Archipelago, Australia, and the SW Pacific Islands. Many gaps still exist, of course, notably in parts of South America, Central Africa, Madagascar, and the Malay Archipelago. New species are still being described at an amazing rate, over 150 per year for every year over the past ten years to my knowledge. Taxonomists still have much work to do.

The tools that are now available to orchid researchers grow apace, better machines, better analytical techniques, and advances in chemistry that have enabled study of the orchid genome to play an increasing role in a variety of disciplines from systematics to studies of population biology and the mycorrhizal association. The availability of techniques such as DNA analysis are bringing many young scientists into orchid research, and their work is revolutionising our understanding of this large and diverse family. A number are now involved in the monumental new classification of the orchids being published as Genera Orchidacearum. We are pleased to announce the publication of volume 2, covering Orchideae, Diseae, and Diurideae, in January 2001. The third volume approaches completion and will be submitted to the publishers shortly.

Two conferences in Australia this autumn will concentrate on some of the current work and advances in systematics and orchid conservation, respectively. The first in early September in Sydney is the Flora Malesiana Conference that will have a symposium dedicated to orchids. The Flora Malesiana region encompasses the Malay Peninsula and Archipelago, the Philippines, New Guinea, and the Solomon Islands. We still have an incomplete knowledge of the rich orchid flora of the region, estimated at over 5,000 species and including some of the most ornamental orchids. The forests of this region have been decimated in the last century and are a mere fraction of what they were only 30 years ago. Documented extinctions have been few so far but are anticipated to accelerate alarmingly in the early years of the new century. A knowledge of what orchids are currently there and where and how they grow are vital tools that can be used to ensure their survival.

The second conference, which develops the theme of orchid conservation in depth, will be in Perth in late September. The First International Orchid Conservation Congress is jointly sponsored by Kings Park Botanic Garden, Botanical Gardens Conservation International, the Australian Network for Plant Conservation and IUCN’s Species Survival Commission’s Orchid Specialist Group. Topics covered include population biology, conservation genetics, propagation, seed storage and banking, managing trade in wild orchids, the role of orchid nurseries and growers, re-introduction, and recovery planning. Practical issues will be emphasised. The post-conference tour at the peak of the orchid flowering season will be a highlight when over 100 species can be seen in flower!

If 1800 and the work of Olof Swarz can be taken as the start of the first century of orchid research then we enter the third century in reasonably good shape and with these two conferences a timely reminder that orchid research can make a contribution to the survival of species and habitats around the world. I look forward to seeing you all in Australia in September.

Pseudocentrum in Peru

During a visit to the University of Aarhus (AAU) in July 2000, I was able to identify many of the institution’s fine collections from Ecuador. Among them were four unidentified specimens of Pseudocentrum.

In the first orchid volume of the Flora of Ecuador, Garay recorded Pseudocentrum bursarium Rchb.f. without any vouchers, basing his opinion on the previous records of the species from Colombia and Peru. The following vouchers document the occurrence of P. bursarium in the provinces of Carchi and Napo.

ECUADOR: Prov. Carchi, ca. 3 km SW of El Carmelo, 3150-3350 m, 16 Apr. 1979, B. Løjtnant et al. 12615 (AAU!); Prov. Napo, S side of Cerro Sumaco, 2900-3050 m, 1-2 May 1979, B. Løjtnant & U. Molau 13045 (AAU!).

Garay cited a single voucher from province Imbabura for P. sylvicola Rchb.f. Two specimens at Aarhus and one collection at Kew extend the documented range of this species in Ecuador to include the provinces of Carchi, Napo, and Tungurahua.

ECUADOR: Prov. Carchi, ca. 3 km SW of El Carmelo, 3150-3350 m, 16 Apr. 1979, B. Løjtnant et al. 12614 (AAU!); Prov. Napo, S side of Cerro Sumaco, 2900-3050 m, 1-2 May 1979, B. Løjtnant & U. Molau 13046 (AAU!); Prov. Napo, Cerro Sumaco, 3200 m, 29 Apr. 1979, M. T. Madison 6886 (K!; SEL); Prov. Tungurahua, Road Patate to Leito to Llanganates range, 3000 m, 12 Apr. 1985, A. Hirtz et al. 2494 (K!; MO).

It’s worth noting here that both species of Pseudocentrum were discovered in flower and growing together in Carchi and Napo. – Eric A. Christenson, 1646 Oak St., Sarasota, Florida 34236, USA.

New For You From Kew

The Kew Record of Taxonomic Literature is now available for searching via the Web (http://www.rbgkew.org.uk). This valuable resource lists references to all publications relating to the taxonomy of flowering plants, gymnosperms, and ferns and to papers of taxonomic interest in related fields, such as anatomy and morphology, palynology, embryology, and reproductive biology, along with relevant bibliographies and biographies. The database contains about 175,000 references published from 1971 to date with new references added once a week.

Researchers at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew have also announced the internet launch of the International Plant Names Index (IPNI). This comprehensive listing of over 1.3 million scientific names for seed plants is the product of a collaboration between Kew scientists and programmers and their partners at two other top botanical research institutions: Harvard University Herbaria, USA, and the Centre for Plant Biodiversity Research, Canberra, Australia. Although many scientific organizations have databases that hold records of plant names and bibliographic sources, until now there has been no freely available, comprehensive, global system. This million-dollar project, jointly funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation, the U.S. Geological Survey, the Headley Trust, and Reuters Foundation, represents a major step toward making accurate information on plant resources available to scientists throughout the world. The IPNI will be used by biologists, conservationists, ecologists, and ethnobotanists in order to check the names and bibliographic details of the plants with which they are working. It is anticipated that it will also have a broader appeal as a "plant name spell checker" for anyone whose interests bring them into contact with scientific plant names, e.g. herbalists, journalists, and even keen gardeners. Eventually, links will lead the user from the name itself to other electronic sources of information on the tree, shrub or herb in question.

The need for a complete listing of all the world’s plants by name has long been recognized. In 1881, just a few months before his death, Charles Darwin arranged a legacy of £250 a year for five years so that the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, could employ someone to produce just such a list. The eventual product, entitled Index Kewensis, contained some 400,000 names. However, new names continue to be published at the rate of up to 6,000 a year as new species are described and scientific understanding of relationships among organisms improves. Additions to the list over the past century have resulted in a total database of over 1,000,000 names. When these are combined with data contributed by American and Australian botanists the result is a listing which is unrivalled in size and coverage. For more information and access to the International Plant Names Index see http://www.ipni.org.

Carr’s Kinabalu Collections

In 1933, C. E. Carr spent several months collecting orchids and other plants on the slopes of Gunung Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia (British North Borneo at the time). He used two numbering systems simultaneously: 1) Singapore Field Numbers (SFN-series), ranging from 26251 through 28059, for most herbarium samples of orchids and all herbarium samples of other plants; and 2) numbers ranging from 3001 through 3771 for spirit samples of orchids (usually matching a herbarium sample with the same number or with an SFN number) and for a small number of herbarium specimens. The only known document that matches the two number-series is Carr’s notebook, now kept at the Singapore Botanic Gardens Herbarium (SING). It also includes extensive colour descriptions and other field observations for all the orchids collected during this trip.

The herbarium specimens have concise labels with only basic information. The first set is at SING, and other sets have been distributed. Carr processed only a few of his spirit samples, also stored in SING. After his death in 1936, most of his spirit collection was neglected. Some 350 samples were recovered recently, but they are in a poor state. Some samples were beyond recognition and have been discarded. All other samples are extremely fragile but still recognizable.

Both the notebook and the spirit samples are valuable because they enable a more accurate identification of the herbarium specimens. The notebook has been photocopied, and lists of matching 3000-series numbers and SFN numbers have been added for easy reference. Copies have been distributed to herbaria in possession of a set of Carr’s herbarium collection from Gunung Kinabalu (BRI, C, K, L, LAE).

The spirit material is only available for examination at SING because the material is too fragile to be sent on loan. – J. J. Vermeulen, Herbarium, Singapore Botanic Gardens, 1 Cluny Road, Singapore 259569.

Book Reviews

Schuiteman, A. and de Vogel, E. 2000. Orchid Genera of Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Nationaal Herbarium Nederland, Leiden. Price: NLG 50.00 (NLG: 25.00 from southeast Asian countries). Thai/English ISBN: 90-71236-44-7. Lao/English ISBN: ISBN 90-71236-42-0. Khmer/English ISBN 90-71236-43-9. Vietnamese/English ISBN 90-71236-41-2.

This new, attractively priced orchid flora of southeast Asia is a highly commendable milestone, mostly for the fact that it has been translated into Thai, Lao, Khmer, and Vietnamese by native speakers, enabling local residents to access information on orchid identification in their own languages. Publication was made possible by a partnership between the CY 99 Environment Component of the World Bank and the Netherlands Partnership programme through the IUCN Regional Biodiversity Programme for South and Southeast Asia. The implications for education and conservation in the four countries are obvious, which helps to explain why the Worldwide Fund for Nature supported a 10% larger press run. This is in fact only one of 20 such projects funded by the World Bank and IUCN to produce multilingual editions to expand awareness of biodiversity in southeast Asia.

For those with no botanical training, there are bilingual, easy-to use keys to the 174 genera of the area along with a bilingual glossary and illustrations of orchid floral structure. Each of the 174 genera treated is described with information on distribution, habitat, and diagnostic features. Most genera are also illustrated by one or more superb color photographs, four to a page.

I applaud the authors, translators, and contributors for publishing not only a worthwhile orchid flora of the Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam (and surrounding countries) but also field guides that should actually have an significant, local impact on preservation of species under pressures imposed by the most destructive species on the planet.

Szlachetko, D. L. and P. Rutkowski. 2000. Gynostemia Orchidalium 1. Acta Botanica Fennica 169: 1-380. Finnish Zoological and Botanical Publishing Board, Helsinki. 380 pages, 435 line drawings. Price unknown. ISBN 951-9469-63-X.

In 1995, Darius Szlachetko published Systema Orchidalium, a new classification of the orchids, apostasioids and cypripedioids based upon his detailed morphological analyses on their flowers. It laid out his new classification which recognised these three groups as distinct families and divided the Orchidaceae into eight subfamilies: Orchidoideae, Thelymitroideae, Spiranthoideae, Tropidioideae, Neottioideae, Vanilloideae, Epidendroideae, and Vandoideae. Three of these, Thelymitroideae, Tropidioideae, and Vanillioideae were newly recognised by him. In addition, he recognised many new tribes and subtribes, several new genera, and made many new combinations in them. Systema Orchidalium has not been particularly well received nor widely accepted, mainly because it lacked the detailed evidence to support the new classification. His new publication Gynostemia Orchidalium, written with Piotr Rutkowski, seeks to remedy that by providing detailed illustrations of the gynostemium morphology (column including androecium and gymnoecium) of every orchid genus that the author has managed to examine. In truth this is an impressive number, including many that have not been illustrated or well illustrated before. The drawings of orchid columns in the book are excellent, clear, and well labelled and are certainly a welcome addition to the orchid literature.

The introductory chapters cover materials and methods (flowers preserved in spirit have been the main source for the drawings), terminology, and a review of gynostemium structure. The main text comprises detailed treatments of each subfamily, tribe and subtribe that includes keys, nomenclature, illustrations and morphological observations of the gymnoecium and sometimes of other characters of the flower and plant.

The concentration on the gynoecium is, however, the major weakness of the classification proposed in Systema Orchidalium and elaborated here. There is no question that gynostemium morphology contains important clues to relationships, a fact apparent to Lindley, Reichenbach, Bentham, Pfitzer, and the many others who have contemplated orchid classification and phylogeny. However, we now know that there is evidence from many other sources, such as chemistry, cytology, anatomy, and particularly DNA, that reveals so much more.

Nevertheless, I am pleased to see this detailed account of the orchid column which brings together for the first time so many first-class illustrations of the many complex structures have evolved in the promotion of effective out-crossing. Using the book will, no doubt, be easier when volume 2 is published because volume 1 lacks an index.

Orchids of New Guinea. Vol. I. Illustrated Checklist and Genera

This is a CD-ROM written and compiled by André Schuiteman and Ed de Vogel of the Nationaal Herbarium Nederland, Leiden branch (formerly known as the Rijksherbarium). It contains about 2000 images, 132 generic descriptions, a checklist covering some 5400 names, tools for identification, a hyperlinked glossary with over 500 terms, references, notes on habitats, and much more, all relating to the orchids of New Guinea.

About half of the images are reproductions of original pencil drawings by J. J. Smith, who next to Rudolf Schlechter was the most prolific author on New Guinea orchids. Many of these drawings have never been published before and several represent taxa not illustrated elsewhere. The remaining images are in full colour; they were made after colour slides contributed by well-known photographers and institutions. For almost all taxa, nearly 3000 at current count, a brief indication of cultural requirements is provided, which, together with the very large number of illustrations, should make this CD-ROM a tremendously useful source for orchid growers.

It is the first volume in a series, which, pending additional funding, will eventually cover all orchid genera and species of southeast Asia. The second planned volume will treat the New Guinea Dendrobiinae in detail.

The current CD-ROM will be available around February 2001 for the very reasonable price of 50 Euro. For ordering information send an e-mail to: zoelen@nhn.leidenuniv.nl or write to: Publications Department, Nationaal Herbarium Nederland, PO Box 9514, 2300 RA Leiden, The Netherlands, or send a fax: +31 71 5273511.
