In Memoriam: Marion Ruff Sheehan
We are sad to report the death of Marion Ruff Sheehan on 20 July 1998 as a result of complications from open-heart surgery. Her botanical drawings and paintings helped to define 38 books, including An Illustrated Survey of Orchid Genera, Hortus II, Hortus IIII, Genera Palmarum, and Lawrence's Taxonomy of Vascular Plants. With husband Tom she produced 186 consecutive installments of "Orchid Genera Illustrated" for the American Orchid Society Bulletin and its successor magazine titled Orchids. She trained numerous students in botanical art while Professor at the University of Florida, staged several successful art exhibits, and lectured widely. In 1991 she received the American Orchid Society's Certificate of Meritorious Achievement in Orchid Education (with Tom) and in 1995 the AOS Gold Medal of Achievement.
At the family's request, memorial gifts should be sent either to the AOS Headquarters Development Fund, specifically to benefit the Library's archiving efforts (6000 South Olive Avenue, West Palm Beach, Florida 33405 USA) or to the PEO Loan Fund, c/o Helen Tate, 4215 NW 20th Place, Gainesville, Florida 32605 USA).
We extend our heartfelt sympathies to Tom and his family and mourn the passing of one of our generation's truly talented and prolific botanical illustrators.
