The Orchid Herbarium at Kew

The Orchid Herbarium at Kew will shortly be extended to double its present size by the incorporation of the old room where specimens were mounted. We anticipate that the current space for storing herbarium specimens will increase by about 30%, allowing much needed expansion space to allow the present collection to be re- curated as and when necessary and also more working space for staff and visitors. The Orchid Library, previously across the corridor, will be moved to occupy the eastern end of the new facility to provide an integrated orchid facility.

Current building work is nearing completion. We hope that the new storage cupboards and shelving for books will be in place by August 1998. This should allow the staff to move back in early September. We will be open for business and visitors by mid-September if all goes well.
