Description

Annual or perennial herbs or shrubs, with simple and/or branched hairs; leaves opposite or in whorls of 3-12; inflorescence thyrsoid; bracts small; bracteoles small; calyx 5-lobed (3/2), lobes subequal or anterior longer; corolla weakly 2-lipped, 4-lobed (3/1), purple or white, not hooded, anterior lip narrow, entire; stamens equal or posterior pair slightly longer, spreading or subdeclinate, exserted from the corolla, filaments usually bearded along centre with moniliform hairs, anthers about as long as broad, thecae confluent; stigma-lobes equal to subequal; nutlets 1- 4, 0.5-1.1 x 0.3-1.0 mm, rounded at apex, glabrous, often glossy.  2n = 12, 32, 34, 60, 64, 72.  About 75 spp., mostly in moist to mesic forest or damp places, from S and SE Asia to China, a few species in South tropical Africa, Australia, Taiwan and Japan.
