Description
Annual or perennial herbs, with at least some branched hairs and often also with simple hairs; leaves usually toothed, petiolate; inflorescence thyrsoid or rarely racemoid; calyx 5-15 (-30)-lobed, lobes equal or variously unequal, usually ± spiny, sometimes uncinate; corolla 2-lipped, 5-lobed (2/3), posterior lip 2-lobed, long or moderately long, flat or almost so, tube shorter than calyx; stamens included in corolla-tube, thecae confluent or subconfluent; style included in corolla-tube, stigma-lobes unequal or subequal; nutlets rounded or subtruncate at apex, glabrous or with sessile glands at apex. 2n = 20, 26, 28, 34, 54. About 40 spp., mainly in rather dry places, Europe and N Africa to Pakistan, with M. vulgare L. more widespread and introduced elsewhere.
