Description

Shrubs and subshrubs, strongly aromatic; leaves opposite, petiolate, simple, toothed or entire; inflorescence of axillary and terminal cymes, corymboid; bracts absent; calyx actinomorphic, accrescent, 5-lobed; corolla bluish purple or pale green to yellowish, zygomorphic, 5-lobed (4/1), posterior lobes similar, ±entire, anterior lobe much larger, concave, dentate to fimbriate-laciniate, corolla in bud ±symmetrical; stamens 4, equal to didynamous, exserted, filaments straight, divergent, thecae parallel, separate at dehiscence; pollen suprareticulate or psilate, columellae sparingly branched; ovary unlobed; stigma-lobes equal; disc absent; fruit a schizocarp of 4 nutlets, nutlets boat-shaped (arcuate in cross-section) or nearly flat, laterally winged, usually smooth, glabrous or pubescent, attachment-scar as long as nutlet; endosperm scanty. 2n = 26, 52, 40?.  Seven species, China, Mongolia, Tibet, Taiwan, Korea and Japan.  The artificial hybrid C. x clandonensis A. Simmonds ex Rehder is widely grown as an ornamental.
