Description
Herbs, ?aromatic; leaves simple; inflorescence thyrsoid with cymes sessile, 3-flowered; bracts persistent, not coloured, inconspicuous; calyx radially symmetrical, tubular-campanulate, straight, 5-lobed, lobes equal, deltoid; throat open, glabrous; corolla strongly 2-lipped, 5-lobed (4/1), violet, posterior lip ascending, with 2 median lobes exceeding lateral lobes, anterior lip horizontal, concave, corolla-tube straight, parallel-sided, dilating at throat; stamens 4 held over lower lip, posterior pair attached above midpoint of corolla-tube, glabrous, inappendiculate, anterior pair attached at corolla throat; style capitate-clavate; stigma-lobes equal, rounded, connivent; disc 4-lobed with anterior lobe larger; nutlets ± ovoid, glabrous, perhaps not mucilaginous. One species, B. lanceolata (Gürke) G.Tayl., in marshes, Angola.
