"CITES NEWS" - PLANTS

A Newsletter for the European Region of the CITES Plants Committee

Issue 2 1994

Also produced in
Spanish and French

This issue includes:

Introduction

This issue of CITES NEWS brings you up-to-date with the items to be discussed at the 9th CITES Conference of the Parties (COP9), to be held in Fort Lauderdale, USA from 7th - 18th November 1994. COP9 will be the largest ever meeting of the Parties - the USA are expecting 3000 participants. Plants will be centre stage, with proposals to list a number of timber species on the Appendices. Hopefully there will be an informed debate on the scientific merits of the proposals and the problems associated with their implementation before final decisions are made.

During the early stages of COP9 the CITES regions will meet to elect new representatives for the various committees. I do not intend to stand for re-election as European Representative on the Plants Committee. I have enjoyed my two terms as Representative, but now feel the post needs to change - especially in such a large region. We do hope however, to continue with this newsletter in association with the new Representative.

Noel McGough

Questionnaire
In Issue 1 of CITES NEWS we asked you to help us by filling in a questionnaire to enable us to provide you with the information you need.

We would like to thank all those who returned the questionnaires so promptly and to urge those of you who have not yet done so to get it in the post soon! In case it got lost, we have included another copy in this issue. The more views we get from you, the better.

If anyone has any news items they would like included in any future issues of CITES NEWS, please send it to Jacqui Roberts at Kew.

CITES Plants Committee
Over 70 delegates attended the Fifth CITES Plants Committee Meeting in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico on 16 - 19 May 1994.

This was a particularly important meeting as it was the last PC meeting before the Conference of the Parties in November. It was a very successful meeting and thanks are due particularly to the Mexican organisations, INE SEDESOL and CANTE for their extensive background preparation, the organisation of the venue and ongoing support. This enabled a packed agenda to be completed on time.

9th Conference of the Parties (COP9)
The Secretariat has circulated details (Notification 803, 28 April 1994) to the Parties covering Registration and Reservation forms, Provisional Agenda, Working Programmes and Rules of Procedure for COP9.

If you are representative of a Non-Government Organisation, remember your organisation must contact your Management Authority and the CITES Secretariat (Geneva) if you wish to attend.
