Wildlife at Wakehurst

Wild Fact 9: Bats are one of the most successful groups of mammals and the only one that can properly fly! There are almost 1000 species found throughout the world. 16 species are found in Britain including the Pipistrelle and the Brown long-eared bat.

Wild Fact 25: The dormouse (Muscardinus avellenarius) has become extinct in up to 7 UK counties from which it was previously found. The species has suffered from decline in traditional management of hazel woodland (source: UK Species Action Plan for the Dormouse). We have a population of dormice in the grounds of Wakehurst Place that is being actively managed and monitored.
