An exhibition including artefacts made
from UK native plants, a selection of UK timbers, photographs
of UK habitats and examples of present-day uses of wild plants
Wild Harvest reflects the enduring bond between people and
the wild plants of the British countryside. This new exhibition
in White Peaks draws upon Kew's recently completed survey
of the ways people continue to make a living from wild plants.
Craft workers employ traditional techniques, using reeds for
thatching, willow for baskets and rushes for mats, elderflower
cordials, rowan jellies and pickled samphire are among the
increasing selection of native plant foods to be found on
supermarket shelves.
The exhibition combines striking landscape and plant portraits
with photographs of people harvesting and working with plant
materials. Visitors will also have the opportunity to see
British timbers, baskets, fish traps, clogs, walking sticks
and other plant products from Kew's extensive economic botany
collections. Combining all these elements, 'Wild Harvest'
is a celebration of the conservation of diversity, not only
of plants and animals, but also of landscapes, traditions
and crafts.
