Out of the Wood - Chainsaw Sculptures by Paul Sivell

Saturday 23 to Friday 29 August between 10.00am and 6.30pm.

Sculptor and wood carver Paul Sivell will be performing chainsaw demonstrations under the pine trees along the Cedar Vista

There will also be a collection of his other works on view. The finished pieces will go on permanent display at Kew in autumn around a new pond currently under construction.

During his week at Kew he will create giant wooden models of various creatures including a six foot Emperor dragonfly, a frog and a crested newt.

Paul carves his striking sculptures from a range of different woods using local timber from sustainable sources. He begins with a chainsaw to cut out the rough shape before progressing through a range of power and hand tools to end up with a fine, smooth chiselled finish. Paul's creations can
already be seen at Kew's invertebrate loggery where he carved two giant stag beetles last year, and two badger sculptures in the human-size badger sett.
