Charcoal Burner's Encampment

On throughout the festival, at Wakehurst Place

Charcoal burning demonstration on 9/10/11 August

At Wakehurst Place up to 3 tonnes of BAR-B-KEW charcoal is made each year in a portable steel kiln. This summer, under the watchful eye of expert woodcollier, Alan Waters, staff at Wakehurst Place will demonstrate how charcoal was made in the traditional earth burn way. There is more to this ancient practice than you might imagine. Too little air during burning will result in low quality charcoal. Too much air and all your efforts turn to ash. The process, from wood to charcoal, will take three days and three nights
