At Wakehurst Place up to 3 tonnes of BAR-B-KEW charcoal is
made each year in a portable steel kiln. This summer, under
the watchful eye of expert woodcollier, Alan Waters, staff
at Wakehurst Place will demonstrate how charcoal was made
in the traditional earth burn way. There is more to this ancient
practice than you might imagine. Too little air during burning
will result in low quality charcoal. Too much air and all
your efforts turn to ash. The process, from wood to charcoal,
will take three days and three nights
