Sir William Hooker, the first official director of the Royal Botanic
Gardens, Kew, described and named this plant in 1831. Referring
to its magnificent and very distinctive bucket-shaped flowers, he
named it Coryanthes from the Greek words corys
(helmet) and anthos (flower).
