Carl Roebelen, who discovered Phalaenopsis sanderiana on the island of Mindanao, collected 21,000 plants to send back to his patron Frederick Sander in England. Sadly, they were swept away by a hurricane which hit the Philippines. Sander’s telegram to his collector simply stated ‘Return. Recollect’. Roebelen’s second batch was considerably smaller in size.
