Known as the ‘black orchid’ of Borneo for its striking
green and jet-black flowers, this species has become very rare because
the peat swamp forests it inhabits have been cleared or burnt. John
Day was very struck by this plant, noting ‘I like it very
much – it is so peculiar. I think it is almost the only thing
I ever used lampblack for’.
