Although many of the orchids that John Day painted were from the
humid tropics, he also illustrated various hardy species including
many European and British species. The heath spotted orchid is usually
found growing in acid heathland, woodland or damp bogs. This cultivated
specimen is particularly magnificent and was sent
to Day by Mr C J Knight of Sevenoaks in Kent.
