Dracula roezlii bears the name of its collector, Benedict Roezl, who travelled through tropical America in search of orchids for almost 30 years from 1854. When he lost a hand whilst demonstrating a fibre-extracting machine in Cuba, he had it replaced with a hook. He was not deterred from further journeys although he reported that it was difficult to alight from a horse when he spotted new orchid treasures.
