This ‘exquisitely lovely’ species arrived in John Day’s
collection in 1846, soon after it had been discovered by two Belgian
plant hunters in northern Colombia. By the late nineteenth century,
however, it had been driven almost to extinction in its natural
habitat due to the enormous numbers wrenched from the wild
by collectors from rival firms.
