The dramatic markings on this orchid’s flowers are reflected in the plant’s common name in Guatemala of ‘Boca de Tigre’. George Ure Skinner discovered it near Guatemala City in 1836. The preserved specimens he made are held in Kew’s Herbarium in John Lindley’s orchid herbarium. John Day inherited his plant from his father, who bought a specimen in 1845 or 1846.
