The genus Scuticaria is known for its long leaves, which
look rather like rats’ tails. John Day commented that this
species had leaves 3 to 4 feet in length. William Hooker, who was
later to become the first official director of the Royal Botanic
Gardens, Kew, first described this species in 1837. He named it
after its collector, Matthew Steele.
