William Ellis was a missionary working in Madagascar for the London
Missionary Society between 1853 and 1865. He collected many orchids
for the nursery firm of Messrs Low and Co. of Upper Clapton, including
this species which he found growing as an epiphyte on evergreen
forest trees along the eastern coast of the island. John Day bought
two specimens from Ellis’s own collection after his death
in 1872.
