This Colombian orchid, with its astonishing purple flowers, was one of the discoveries of the German plant collector, Gustav Wallis. From a series of expeditions to the forests along the Brazilian Amazon beginning in 1858, and subsequently in the Philippines, the northern Andes and Panama, Wallis introduced a huge number of orchids to European orchid enthusiasts. He died of fever combined with dysentery in Ecuador in 1876.
