Over a period of 20 years, from 1864, John Day painted Vanda tricolor a total of 11 times, attempting to capture the variability of its flowers, in colour and shape. He was particularly fond of this species, writing ‘In bloom or not, it is a grand plant and no orchid house is complete without it’.
