The Reverend William Ellis introduced this species from eastern
Madagascar. On his return to England in the late 1860s, he published
two books about his experiences as a missionary on Madagascar; these
became best-sellers as they appealed strongly to Victorians keen
to read first-hand accounts of exotic countries. One of his finest
discoveries was Grammangis ellisii, an epiphytic species
resembling the South-east Asian ‘tiger orchids’ (Grammatophyllum).
Today it is a rare orchid in Madagascar’s dwindling coastal
forests.
