The common name of this genus of orchids – spider orchids
– reflects the ungainly appearance of the flowers. The genus
name, Brassia, honours William Brass, who collected plants
for Kew in western and southern Africa. He illustrated them for
Sir Joseph Banks, horticultural advisor to King George III and unofficial
director of the Royal Gardens at Kew.
