Found only on Table Mountain and adjacent mountain ranges in the
Cape province of South Africa, this rare plant is nevertheless the
best known of all African orchids. It grows alongside torrential
mountain streams in permanently wet soil. Butterflies pollinate
its glorious red flowers. In late Victorian times at Kew, a cross
between Disa uniflora and the allied species, Disa
tripetaloides produced a number of popular hybrids, including
Disa Kewensis.
