With its large flowers, attractively patterned in shades of purple, red or pink, this species is extremely popular amongst orchid growers. It is one of many Guatemalan orchids introduced to cultivation by George Ure Skinner, who collected it in the 1840s. The preserved specimens he made are held in Kew’s Herbarium where they are still used for botanical research.
