The golden flowers of Dendrobium heterocarpum drawn here
by John Day came from a plant sent to him from north-eastern India
by his nephew, W J Williamson. Nathaniel Wallich, the superintendent
of the botanic garden in Calcutta for 30 years from 1817, made the
first collection of this species. Wallich was extremely influential,
both as a botanist cataloguing the Indian flora and as a plant collector,
introducing huge numbers of plants from India and Nepal into cultivation.
