Found growing in just a few places within bamboo thickets on the
steep slopes of Mount Kinabalu in Sabah, Paphiopedilum dayanum
was a real prize for Hugh Low, who discovered it in 1856. The first
European to climb Mount Kinabalu, he is commemorated by Low’s
peak, the highest point on the mountain. John Day was the first
person to flower the species in cultivation and it was named for
him by Professor Heinrich Reichenbach of Hamburg who became the
leading orchid expert upon John Lindley’s death.
