Expedition overview

The aim of the Midnight Rambler sleepover programme is to give children aged between 8 and 11 a unique unforgettable botanical adventure in the stimulating surroundings of Kew Gardens.

Kew is a magical place at night, containing 300 acres of trees, grasslands and wild places to explore.

Expert Rangers bring the night to life - encouraging children to develop their interest in the life of plants and animals. Weather permitting, we will spend much of the evening outdoors, exploring and learning through hands-on activities and botanical treasure hunts.   We will also travel to the Desert and Rainforest in the Princess of Wales Conservatory.

Each evening will have three main activities each lasting up to 1 hour.  There will be a 20 minute snack break in between. See the event Packing List for details of what clothes and equipment you may need to bring with you.

For an example of a typical evening please see our Frequently Asked Questions page.

Following the three main activities there will be a camp fire (weather permitting!), along with music and singing. Adult supervisors and Rangers will help the children to toast marshmallows over the fire.

After all the excitement of the evening, the children return to Climbers and Creepers. They may choose to sleep in the giant bramble tangle, beneath a giant dormouse nest or snooze with the millipedes!

It is the responsibility of the Group Helpers to get their own children to sleep.

In the morning, the children rise early for breakfast followed by an awards ceremony - which team won the most points?
