Gordon the Garden Gnome
Gordon
the Garden Gnome from the hit CBBC animation series of the same name
is an example to all budding horticulturalists- and not just the two
to six year old ones he's primarily aimed at!- for Gordon's green gardening
gloves hide green fingers. He knows just about everything there is to
know about plants and flowers and now Kew's younger visitors can share
some of his wisdom through a new educational interactive trail.

Habitat Trail

Explore and discover some of the fascinating plants and animals
that live in the wilder places at Kew.
The trail will take you on a journey through six different habitats in
the Conservation Area at Kew and has been produced with support
from English Nature. The Habitat Trail is aimed at Years 3-6 and
links to the National Curriculum science objectives in Unit 4B
(Habitats) and Unit 6A (Interdependence and Adaptation) and
follows on from Unit 2B (Plants and Animals in the local
environment) It is also suitable for parents with children aged
between 7 and 11.
The trail may be done as a whole or with small groups and the
posts can be visited in any order. The whole trail takes
approximately 2 hours although you can take a short cut if you
have time restrictions.
We have included ideas for extension activities that can be carried
out back in school or at home.

Numeracy at Kew
This
trail is based on the key objectives in the National Numeracy Strategy
- years 3 and 4 - and can be easily adapted for children throughout the
primary age range. It highlights the following objectives:
-
practice estimation skills on height, length and distance;
-
read, write and order a range of numbers;
-
solve problems by organising and interpreting numerical data into
lists, tables and graphs;
-
use mental calculations to solve simple number problems involving
numbers in real life.
The trail may be done as a whole or with groups working in particular
sections according to the time available, the year group and the ability
of your pupils. The trail as given takes approximately an hour-and-a-half.
To allow for differentiation and progression, there are a range of questions
and opportunities for extension.
