Schools Education - KewResourcesTrails Downloadable trailsWe have a number of trails which can be carried out on a visit to Kew, and a number of teachers packs which can be used to plan activities for pre and post visit work. TrailsFor Pre School and Key Stage 1 we have created a 'Gordon the Garden Gnome Trail', which can be downloaded from our website, and takes children around the Order Beds and Student Vegetable Plots at Kew. Download the Gordon the Garden Gnome Trail The Numeracy Trail is suitable for Key Stage 2 and provides opportunities to practice estimation skills; read, write and order a range of numbers; solve problems by organising and interpreting numerical data and use mental calculations to solve simple number problems. Download the numeracy trail (pdf) (part 1), (part 2) The Habitat trail for Key Stage 2 will take you on a journey through six different British habitats in the Conservation Area at Kew and has been produced with support from English Nature. These can be used either at Kew or back in school. The Wildlife Zone packIn a recent project at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, children from two local primary schools worked with Kew staff to develop, restore and interpret a natural habitat within the Gardens. This resource pack brings together their experiences, and is based on the concepts and techniques that were tested or stimulated as a result of this project. Download the free education pack. The Spice Pack for Key Stage 2 develops a number of themes using Spices as an inspiration. Spices have been valued for thousands of years because of their flavour and aroma. In addition to their culinary uses, spices were the basis of many medicines and dyes developed by the native cultures of the lands where spices originally grew. The quest for spices led to the opening of new trade routes and to the finding of land new to western civilisation. Many technological advances were made as a result - navigational aids such as the compass and the astrolabe; bigger, faster ships; cannon with which to defend the precious cargoes. The struggle for control of the spice trade led to many wars and the rise and fall of empires. Spices are still enjoyed today and are an important commercial crop for those countries which enjoy the right climatic conditions for their production. The pack contains sections specific to history, geography, science and technology, but teachers will find that the activities offer many opportunities for pupils to develop their literacy and numeracy skills. The pack contains an activity book, a location chart showing the countries of origin for a number of common spices, and a set of photocards. The Evolution House support pack comprises a teachers' guide with student activities (Key Stage 3 and 4) for use during, in preparation for, and as follow-up to a visit to the Evolution House at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. It enables a differentiated approach and uses a variety of teaching and learning strategies for the study of plant evolution - a fascinating topic that will appeal to many students. Plant CulturesThis new website (www.plantcultures.org.uk) invites you and your pupils to discover more about South Asian plants, their uses, history and the stories that they have inspired. Dedicated schools pages provide ideas for activities in the classroom for Key Stage 2 and 3 in Art and Design, Citizenship, Geography, History and Religious Education. The stories on the website can also be used for literacy work. Kew offers a number of educational activities based at the Kew site relating to Plant Cultures for Key Stage 2, 3 and 4.
