Key Stage 2

A visit to Kew Gardens is an exciting experience for Key Stage 2, bringing concepts about plants to life and we offer a range of stimulating and interactive tours to allow you to explore plants and the living environment.

We have a bookable indoor lunch area called ' The Munch Box' .

Climbers and Creepers provides an exciting opportunity for children to learn about plants and their relationship with animals through play. Climbers and Creepers must be booked in advance, and is suitable for children up to Year 3.

Our range of 50 minute tours for Key Stage 2 includes:

Our 90 minute Topic Days involve 45 minutes of indoor, hands on activity, followed by 45 minutes on a tour.

Local Biodiversity

Available weekdays only. Sessions last 90 minutes and can accommodate a maximum of 15 children at £60 per tour.

In this stimulating and exciting tour of the Gardens we will take you to some of the wilder parts of Kew where we will discover some of the plants and animals that live there. We may take you on a minibeast safari, 'introduce' you to a tree and explore food chains. Whatever happens, you will find about the environment in a new and exciting way. This session uses lots of games and scientific enquiry skills.

Rainforests

Available weekdays only, 50 minute tours at 10:40, 11:40 and 13:10. Maximum group size 20 pupils, £40 per tour

Explore the sights, sounds and smells of the rainforest through an interactive tour packed with group participation.

This tour is designed to introduce children to the diversity and importance of the rainforest environment, find out about the plants and animals that live there, discover the everyday things that come from rainforest plants- from chocolate to rubber gloves and how we can protect this amazing habitat.

Plant Adaptation

Available weekdays only, 50 minute tours at 10:40, 11:40 and 13:10. Maximum group size 20 pupils, £40 per tour

This journey will take you through the deserts and rainforests of the world as we explore different habitats and the plants that grow in them.

Through the use of props, stories and discussion we will discover how plants are adapted to survive in these amazing environments.

Shipwreck Survival

Available weekdays only, 90 minute workshop divided between the classroom Palm House. Maximum group size 15 pupils, £60 per workshop.

Could you survive on a tropical island?! Through the use of pictures, slides, stories, tropical fruit tasting and hands on activities we will discover that all life depends on plants and that they provide us with food, shelter, clothing, medicine and much more. This classroom based activity will be followed by a tour of the Palm House where children can experience the rainforest environment.

Plant Adaptation Topic Day

Available weekdays only, 90 min workshop divided between the classroom Palm House. Maximum group size 15 pupils, £60 per workshop.

This journey will take you through the deserts and rainforests of the world as we explore different habitats and the plants that grow in them.

Through the use of props, stories and discussion we will discover how plants are adapted to survive in these amazing environments.

In our classroom we will get close up and hands on with plants and discover their awesome adaptations, from eating insects to floating on water to reinforce what we have seen on the tour.

Maths and the Environment

Available weekdays only. Sessions last 90 minutes and can accommodate a maximum of 15 children at £60 per tour.

Out in the Gardens we will work with your group on numeracy skills, as well as exploring different habitats and the plants that grow in them.   Learn some unusual skills to measure the height and age of a tree, and explore symmetry, shape and pattern through plants.

Available weekdays only. Sessions last 90 minutes and can accommodate a maximum of 15 children at £60 per tour.

Choose to explore ponds, woodland or grassland. We are able to take you to some of the wilder places at Kew, find out about different habitats and the plants and animals that live in them. Children are taught scientific enquiry skills, use of keys, observation and recording of species. Children experience Science, Geography and Citizenship .

Please note: May require wellies and wet weather clothes.

Ponds

Available weekdays only. Sessions last 90 minutes and can accommodate a maximum of 15 children at £60 per tour.

We worked with local schools to design and build a pond in our conservation area. Through pond dipping, close observation, games and props we will discover some of the plants and animals that live in a pond and investigate their lifecycles.

Please note: Pond dipping may require wellies and wet weather clothes.

On a journey of the Gardens discover where food comes from, how it is grown and how we can help plants grow well. This tour will cover lifecycles of plants and animals

Pollination, Seeds and Dispersal

Available weekdays only. Sessions last 90 minutes and can accommodate a maximum of 15 children at £60 per tour.

We will follow the life journey of a plant from seed to flower as we use microscopes to closely examine seeds and take a tour of the gardens to investigate plant lifecycles. Through games and activities we will bring concepts of germination, seed dispersal and pollination to life!

Science

A visit to a food market

Available weekdays only. Sessions last 90 minutes and can accommodate a maximum of 15 children at £60 per tour.

Linking to our new website, Plant Cultures ( www.plantcultures.org.uk ) this activity will explore the sights, smells and tastes of South Asia as we recreate a visit to a food market. Taste some of the fruits, spices and drinks that come from South-East Asian plants, through use of stories and hands on activities find out about their uses and where they come from.

This will be followed by a tour of the Palm House where we will experience the wet tropics and some of the South East Asian plants that grow there.

The Art of Plant Cultures

Available weekdays only. Sessions last 90 minutes and can accommodate a maximum of 15 children at £60 per tour.

Linked to our website, www.plantcultures.org.uk , We will take a journey around the Palm House at Kew, exploring some of the plants featured on 'Plant Cultures', as well as experiencing the rainforest habitat. The tour will be followed by an art activity inspired by plants and plant products from South Asia.

Food and Spices from Asia

Available weekdays only. Sessions last 90 minutes and can accommodate a maximum of 15 children at £60 per tour.

Come with us on a spice trading voyage through the Palm House as we try to find South Asian foods and spices. Through stories and hands on activities we will discover more about the importance of plants from South Asia. Linked to our website www.plantcultures.org.uk

Trails

The Numeracy Trail is suitable for Key Stage 2 and provides opportunities to practice estimation skills; read, write and order a range of numbers; solve problems by organising and interpreting numerical data and use mental calculations to solve simple number problems.

The Habitat trail for Key Stage 2 will take you on a journey through six different British habitats in the Conservation Area at Kew and has been produced with support from English Nature. The trail takes approximately an hour and a half to complete.
