School of Horticulture - Kew Diploma
Facilities
The
School of Horticulture occupies a large Decimus Burton converted, eighteenth-century,
Grade II listed building within the gardens which has recently been converted
into a modern educational centre. It now provides fully-equipped lecture
rooms, design studio, library, laboratory, computer suite, common room,
kitchen, and administrative offices. The adjacent 200-seater lecture theatre
in the Jodrell Laboratory is used for major conferences and seminars.
Students also have access to the extensive resources of the Royal Botanic
Gardens, including the main library which has one of the finest collections
of botanical books, journals and archives in the world.
Lectures are delivered by a balance of internal Kew experts and external
specialists in the class room or on study tours in the UK or overseas.
A
limited amount of student residential accommodation is available at the
Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. This is normally provided to first year students
in Gumley Cottage, an early eighteenth century Georgian dwelling with
it’s own private garden, located at the southern end of the garden
opposite the picturesque Kew Green. Gumley Cottage is also close to all
local amenities and is a seven minute walk from Kew Bridge overland station
and five minutes from Kew Gardens tube station, both of which provide
quick and direct access to central London stations. Those students who
do not gain a place in this accommodation should make their own arrangements,
via the School of Horticulture whose staff can assist with providing an
approved network of local addresses and rented properties.
