During this popular course, participants will learn how to extend their vision, both in the way they look at plants before releasing the shutter and the best way to approach photography for each particular subject – when using digital cameras.
Illustrated lectures, as well as practical demonstrations, will show how the structure and texture of plants themselves help to determine the most appropriate lighting – both in the field and inside. Participants will learn how to meter tricky subjects with confidence, how to critically appraise composition and lighting as well as how to edit images on a computer or on a light box.
On one day Giles Angel will demonstrate some useful Photoshop techniques – including using the Bridge file browser, shooting raw versus jpeg, raw conversion, adding metadata, colour management tips, batch conversion of raw images, working with layers, adjustment layers, simple colour correction, black and white conversion and simple masking.
Kew offers endless opportunities for working with plants; be it outside in the Gardens or with flowers, cones and leaves as still life indoor subjects.
Anyone who has a passion for plants will benefit from this course which is aimed at both professional and enthusiastic amateur photographers, as well as horticulturists and botanists.

This new course is designed to explore ways of producing stunning photographs of trees. It will include tuition on how to photograph entire trees as well as details of bark and leaves. In addition it will look at how using different techniques – such as using directional and soft lighting, colour, composition etc. – can enhance the final image, as well as teaching you how to get the most out of your own digital equipment.
We’ll
start with an illustrated introductory talk including tree and forest photographs
from around the world before heading out into the Gardens to gain inspiration
amongst Kew’s impressive arboretum. As the course
progresses we’ll evaluate the images taken and work out ways around
the camera’s limitations or how to use them as part of the image
making process.
During the course basic instruction will be given as to how to use Adobe
Photoshop and participants will have the chance to practice their skills
to produce an exhibition quality print by the end of day two.
This is a course devoted to outdoor practical photography
amidst the spring delights of Wakehurst Place with the guidance of one
of the world’s most
successful flower and garden photographers. After an introductory lecture,
the day will be spent in and around the ornamental gardens near the
Mansion which present a wide variety of photographic challenges. The
tutor will be drawing your attention to the trees, plants and views making
up the spring picture at Wakehurst and sharing their hints and tips for
the best ways of capturing them digitally or on film. Suitable for pro-active
improvers.
