This one day course aims to give you the knowledge and confidence to be able
to grow orchids successfully in your own home. Beginning with an introduction
to the wonderful world of orchids, the tutor will then give advice as to the
best kinds to grow and the steps involved in keeping them looking their best.

THE ASPARAGUS TO ZUCCHINI OF VEGETABLE GARDENING

At a time when interest in vegetable growing is at a level
that’s been
unknown for decades we are delighted to offer a comprehensive one day course
covering all the basics of vegetable gardening – and more! It will include
all the essentials for growing under glass, pest control and everything you
need to know to ensure that your plot is productive all year round. We will
also be looking at a wide range of techniques that are essential for success
from seed sowing to harvest for maximum yields and even how to hoe! The aim
is to provide all the information that’s needed to ensure maximum output
for minimal input from plot or pot plus advice on choosing the best varieties
and new exotic vegetables so that you will always be growing produce to be
proud of!

BULBS
Wednesday 16 April

This new one day course considers bulbs growing in the wild and
in cultivation and gives tips on displaying them in your own garden or
in containers.
We’ll start with an illustrated talk on bulbs in the wild,
concentrating on the distinction between summer-growing and winter-growing
ones. Then we’ll
venture into the Gardens to look at some of Kew’s world class collection
of bulbs – such as tulips, fritillaries, iris, Lachenalia etc. – growing
in the open as well as in the Alpine Yard. We’ll also have a demonstration
on potting. The course will also cover the cultivation of South African
and tropical American bulbs, such as Gladiolus, Eucomis and Hippeastrum.

AN INTRODUCTION TO HERBS

The recent popularity of kitchen gardening has also revived an
interest in herbs for their invaluable culinary connection. With this
in mind our new one day course offers all the practical advice you need to
know to grow them successfully. From border design and cultivation in
the ground and containers to propagation, planting and harvesting, it will
reveal how best to combat pests and diseases and store the herbs that
you have grown. The course also touches on the history of herbs and their medicinal
use through the writings of the great herbals and analyses the exciting
prospects for their future. Whether you are new to gardening or are experienced
and would like to discover more about herbs, this is the perfect course
for you!

PLANNING YOUR OWN JAPANESE GARDEN
Thursday 4 September
10.30am – 4pm
Tutor: Professor Fukuhara
Venue: Kew
This course is a must for all those interested in planning their own Japanese
Garden. Styles, techniques and
Japanese artefacts within a garden will all be explained
and there will be a guided visit to Kew’s Japanese
landscape (which was designed by Professor Fukuhara)
to see how a garden comes together. You will then have
an opportunity to make a start at designing your own
garden, or modify your existing one, so please bring
along a sketch of your proposed area including
dimensions etc.
