Public EducationARTSThe Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew has always used botanical illustration in its scientific work and over the years has accumulated a collection of approximately 175,000 illustrations in its archives. The application of botanical illustration for scientific research is as important today as it has ever been. The tradition continues at Kew with professional illustrators able to show detailed characteristics of plants far more clearly than photographic records. Kew’s short courses in Botanical Illustration enable both professional artists and enthusiastic amateurs to develop their techniques within the unique environment at Kew. This 10 day course provides an exciting opportunity to learn about the working practice of a botanical illustrator at Kew and for students to discover the methods and materials required. The basis of good detailed botanical illustration is the understanding of precise drawing techniques and these are demonstrated and emphasised during the course. Pen and ink work is also taught as is watercolour painting using the ‘dry brush’ technique.
The course can accommodate new and experienced artists alike as most of the teaching is individual. Participants work at their own pace and should not feel inhibited if they are beginners. The main objective of the course is to provide students with information and techniques. This will enable them to work on developing their own skills in botanical illustration or to adapt what they have learnt to their own particular interests.
Sessions in plant morphology and microscope work also form part of the course. To complement this, visits to the remarkable collections of the Herbarium and Library, and other various relevant parts of the Gardens will be scheduled.
N.B Please note that no tuition takes place during the weekend on this course.
