12th meeting programme
Friday 22 July, 2005
0830-0900 Poster presentations - see below
0900-1145 EBHL Workshop: Managing the digital revolution
This workshop, organised by the European Botanical and Horticultural Libraries group, discusses the challenges facing botanical institutions as they seek to widen access to their collections through the use of ICTs, including digitisation of texts and images of specimens, linking to catalogues and collaborating internationally to avoid duplication.
1330-1600 Biodiversity informatics: Virtual access to global resources
It is now technologically feasible for researchers anywhere in the world with an Internet connection to have access to any database, text or visual image physically located anywhere else in the world. As an example, someone doing field work in the Amazon can access a database in Germany, a text from a library in the United States, and an image of a herbarium specimen from Australia. Technology now offers vast opportunities to create, share and disseminate information. Presenters in this symposium will discuss various projects from around the world related to the creation of databases, the digitization of printed text and images, the linking of library resources with databases, and information resource "literacy". There will also be discussion of the practical challenges facing librarians and information specialists with regard to material in electronic format in the areas of compiling resources, providing access, and preservation.
To view the list of symposium papers and posters:
Go to the IBC website, click on Programme Planner on the left, and then Search Abstracts Database. Put 12.16 for the symposium and 11-01 for the posters in the search box and click on the Search button. When you get the list of results, click on one of the session links in the right-hand column to get the complete list.
Depending on numbers, the EBHL business meeting will be held either at the end of the morning workshop or as an informal meeting on Friday evening.
