Kew's projects in South Central Africa

Our projects in this region are helping to identify plant species at risk, and saving threatened and useful wild plants in Malawi.

Kew's Millennium Seed Bank partnership in Malawi

Kew's Millennium Seed Bank partnership is helping to save threatened and useful wild plants in  Malawi.

Data and seed from priority plant species is collected and stored in local seed banks located in  Malawi and in Kew's Millennium Seed Bank at Wakehurst Place, West Sussex.

In this region, Kew's Millennium Seed Bank partnership is helping to drive and deliver the Global Plant Conservation Strategy. This includes collecting and conserving threatened and useful plant species, and supporting the growth of trained people participating in local plant conservation projects.

Coastal forests of northern Mozambique

The coastal forests of Eastern Africa, stretching from southern Somalia to southern Mozambique, are considered to be among the top ten biodiversity hotspots in Africa.

The main areas of concern are patches of dry forest found within 20-50 kilometres of the coast. These forest areas provide a home to many endemic plant species, which are not found anywhere else in the world.

Knowledge of the diversity of plant life across the coastal forest areas of Mozambique is poor. Only a very small area is formally protected, yet pressures on coastal land for agriculture and oil exploration are building up.

Working together with our partners in Mozambique, Kew is helping to survey the diversity of plant life across the region's coastal forests. Our work will help to improve understanding of native habitats and plant life in the region. We are also helping to further effective plant conservation in the future. Conservation work protects plant species identified as at risk. Discover more about our work across the coastal forest area of Northern Mozambique.
