Maltebrunia schliebenii

HABIT Perennial. Rhizomes short. Culms erect; 60–100 cm long. Ligule an eciliate membrane; 2–3 mm long. Leaf-blade base with a false petiole; petiole 0.5–1 cm long. Leaf-blades lanceolate; 11–23 cm long; 15–30 mm wide. Leaf-blade venation with distinct cross veins.

INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence a panicle.

Panicle open; elliptic; 10–25 cm long.

Spikelets solitary. Fertile spikelets pedicelled. Pedicels filiform; smooth; tip cupuliform; bibracteate.

FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 2 basal sterile florets; 1 fertile florets; without rhachilla extension. Spikelets lanceolate; laterally compressed; compressed slightly; 8–9 mm long; falling entire. Rhachilla internodes elongated below proximal fertile floret.

GLUMES Glumes both absent or obscure.

FLORETS Basal sterile florets similar; barren; without significant palea. Lemma of lower sterile floret subulate; 1.5–2.5 mm long; 0.2–0.3 length of spikelet. Lemma of upper sterile floret subulate; 1.5–2.5 mm long; 1 length of lower sterile floret. Fertile lemma elliptic; 8–9 mm long; chartaceous; keeled; 5 -veined. Lemma margins involute. Lemma apex acuminate. Palea elliptic; 1 length of lemma; chartaceous; 3 -veined; 1-keeled. Palea apex acuminate.

FLOWER Lodicules 2; elliptic; membranous; acute. Anthers 6. Stigmas 2.

DISTRIBUTION Africa: east tropical.

NOTES Oryzeae. FTEA.
