HABIT Perennial. Rhizomes short; pachymorph. Culms scandent; woody. Culm-internodes terete. Lateral branches dendroid. Ligule an eciliate membrane. Leaf-blade base with a brief petiole-like connection to sheath. Leaf-blades lanceolate.

INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence a panicle.

Panicle open.

Spikelets solitary. Fertile spikelets pedicelled.

FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 1 fertile florets; without rhachilla extension. Spikelets ovate; laterally compressed; 10–12 mm long; breaking up at maturity; disarticulating below each fertile floret.

GLUMES Glumes several; shorter than spikelet, or reaching apex of florets. Lower glume ovate; chartaceous. Lower glume surface without pits. Lower glume apex acute. Upper glume ovate; chartaceous; without keels; 7 -veined. Upper glume apex acute.

FLORETS Fertile lemma ovate; coriaceous; without keel; wingless. Lemma surface unwrinkled; without grooves. Lemma apex acute. Palea coriaceous; without keels.

FLOWER Lodicules 3. Anthers 6. Stigmas 3.

FRUIT Caryopsis with adherent pericarp.

DISTRIBUTION Tropical Asia.
