HABIT Perennial. Rhizomes absent (1), or elongated (2); leptomorph (2/2). Culms erect (1/1); 30–170–400 cm long; woody. Culm-internodes terete. Lateral branches dendroid. Branch complement three (1/1), or several (1/1). Culm-sheaths without auricles (1/1). Culm-sheath blade lanceolate (1/1), or triangular (1/1). Leaf-sheath auricles absent (2), or erect (1). Ligule an eciliate membrane (1), or a ciliolate membrane (2). Leaf-blade base with a brief petiole-like connection to sheath. Leaf-blades persistent (1), or deciduous at the ligule (2); lanceolate. Leaf-blade venation without cross veins (2), or with distinct cross veins (1).

INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence a panicle (2/2).

Panicle open (2/2).

Spikelets solitary (2/2). Fertile spikelets pedicelled (2/2).

FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 4 fertile florets (1/2), or 5–7 fertile florets (2/2), or 8–14 fertile florets (1/2); with diminished florets at the apex (2/2). Spikelets linear (2/2); laterally compressed (2/2); 5–16.25–30 mm long; breaking up at maturity (2/2); disarticulating below each fertile floret (2/2). Rhachilla internodes definite (2/2); pubescent (2/2).

GLUMES Glumes persistent (2/2); shorter than spikelet (2/2). Lower glume lanceolate (2/2); chartaceous (2/2); without keels (2/2). Lower glume surface without pits (2/2); glabrous (1/2), or pilose (1/2). Lower glume apex acuminate (2/2); muticous (1/2), or mucronate (1/2). Upper glume ovate (2/2); chartaceous (2/2); without keels (2/2). Upper glume surface glabrous (1/2), or pilose (1/2). Upper glume apex acuminate (2/2); muticous (1/2), or mucronate (1/2).

FLORETS Fertile lemma ovate (2/2); chartaceous (2/2); without keel (2/2); wingless (2/2). Lemma surface unwrinkled (2/2); without grooves (2/2); glabrous (1/2), or pilose (1/2). Lemma margins ciliolate (2/2). Lemma apex acuminate (2/2); mucronate (1/2), or awned (1/2); 1 -awned (1/1). Palea 1 length of lemma; 8–9 -veined (1/1). Palea surface glabrous (1/2), or pilose (1/2). Palea apex dentate (1/1). Apical sterile florets resembling fertile though underdeveloped (2/2).

FLOWER Lodicules 3 (2/2); glabrous (1/2), or ciliate (2/2). Anthers 3 (2/2). Stigmas 2 (2/2).

FRUIT Caryopsis with adherent pericarp (2/2); ellipsoid (1/1); apex unappendaged (2/2).

DISTRIBUTION Temperate Asia (2), or Tropical Asia (1).
