HABIT Perennial. Rhizomes absent (1), or short (1). Culms erect (1/1); 50–67.5–80 cm long. Ligule an eciliate membrane. Leaf-blades stiff (1), or firm (1).
INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence composed of racemes.
Racemes single, or borne along a central axis (1); linear (1), or oblong (1); unilateral. Rhachis broadly winged; membranous (1), or herbaceous (1); not appreciably folded (1), or folded longitudinally to embrace spikelets (1). Spikelet packing crowded; 4 -rowed.
Spikelets in pairs. Fertile spikelets sessile and pedicelled; 2 in the cluster. Pedicels oblong.
FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 1 basal sterile florets; 1 fertile florets; without rhachilla extension. Spikelets oblong; dorsally compressed; 3.735–4.821–6 mm long; falling entire.
GLUMES Glumes shorter than spikelet (1), or reaching apex of florets (1); thinner than fertile lemma. Lower glume oblong (1), or ovate (1); membranous; without keels; 1–5 -veined (1), or 9 -veined (1). Lower glume lateral veins without ribs (1), or ribbed (1). Lower glume surface without pits. Lower glume apex obtuse (1), or acute (1). Upper glume oblong (1), or obovate (1); chartaceous (1), or coriaceous (1); without keels; 9–11 -veined (1), or 13–15 -veined (1). Upper glume lateral veins ribbed. Upper glume apex entire (1), or dentate (1); 7 -fid (1/1); truncate (1), or obtuse (1).
FLORETS Basal sterile florets male; with palea. Lemma of lower sterile floret oblong; coriaceous; 5 -veined (1), or 7–9 -veined (1); sulcate; obtuse (1), or acute (1); muticous (1), or mucronate (1). Palea of lower sterile floret becoming indurate on keels at maturity; wingless (1), or winged on keels (1). Fertile lemma elliptic (1), or ovate (1); indurate; without keel; wingless; 5 -veined (1/1). Lemma surface smooth (1), or punctate (1); unwrinkled; without grooves. Lemma margins involute. Lemma apex obtuse (1), or acute (1). Palea indurate.
FLOWER Anthers 3 (1/1).
