HABIT Perennial. Culms erect; 24–56 cm long. Ligule a fringe of hairs.

INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence a panicle.

Panicle open.

Spikelets solitary. Fertile spikelets pedicelled. Pedicels filiform; tip oblique.

FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 1 basal sterile florets; 1 fertile florets; without rhachilla extension. Spikelets oblong; dorsally compressed; 3.5–4 mm long; falling entire. Spikelet callus oblong; pilose; base obtuse; attached obliquely.

GLUMES Glumes reaching apex of florets; thinner than fertile lemma. Lower glume ovate; membranous; without keels; 5 -veined. Lower glume surface without pits; villous. Lower glume apex acuminate. Upper glume ovate; membranous; without keels; 9 -veined. Upper glume surface villous. Upper glume apex acute.

FLORETS Basal sterile florets barren; with palea. Lemma of lower sterile floret ovate; membranous; 9 -veined; obtuse. Fertile lemma ovate; coriaceous; without keel; wingless; 5 -veined. Lemma surface unwrinkled; without grooves. Lemma margins involute. Lemma apex obtuse. Palea indurate.

FRUIT Hilum linear.

DISTRIBUTION South America.
