HABIT Perennial. Rhizomes elongated; leptomorph. Culms erect; 300–350–400 cm long; woody. Culm-internodes semiterete. Lateral branches dendroid. Branch complement one (1/1). Culm-sheaths deciduous (1/1). Culm-sheath blade linear (1), or lanceolate (1). Leaf-sheath auricles absent (1), or falcate (1). Ligule an eciliate membrane (1), or a ciliolate membrane (1). Leaf-blade base with a brief petiole-like connection to sheath. Leaf-blades lanceolate, or oblong (1), or ovate (1). Leaf-blade venation without cross veins (1), or with distinct cross veins (1).

INFLORESCENCE Synflorescence bractiferous (1/1); fasciculate (1/1); with spathaceous subtending bracts (1/1); without axillary buds at base of spikelet (1/1).

Fertile spikelets sessile (1/1).

FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 2–5 fertile florets (1/1); with a barren rhachilla extension (1/1). Spikelets lanceolate (1/1); laterally compressed (1/1); 16.6–20.3–24 mm long; breaking up at maturity (1/1); disarticulating below each fertile floret (1/1). Rhachilla internodes definite (1/1); pubescent (1/1).

GLUMES Glumes one the lower absent or obscure (1/1); persistent (1/1); shorter than spikelet (1/1). Upper glume ovate (1/1); chartaceous (1/1); 9–11 -veined (1/1). Upper glume lateral veins with cross-veins (1/1). Upper glume apex acute (1/1).

FLORETS Fertile lemma ovate (1/1); chartaceous (1/1); without keel (1/1); wingless (1/1); 20 -veined (1/1). Lemma surface unwrinkled (1/1); without grooves (1/1). Lemma apex acuminate (1/1). Palea chartaceous (1/1); 10–12 -veined (1/1). Palea keels ciliolate (1/1).

FLOWER Lodicules 3 (1/1); obtuse (1/1). Anthers 6 (1/1). Stigmas 3 (1/1).

FRUIT Caryopsis with adherent pericarp (1/1).

DISTRIBUTION Temperate Asia.
