Neomicrocalamus

HABIT Perennial. Rhizomes elongated; pachymorph. Culms erect (1), or scandent (2); 100–712–1560 cm long; woody. Culm-internodes terete. Culm-nodes flush with internodes (1/2), or swollen (1/2). Lateral branches dendroid. Branch complement one (1), or several (2), or many (1). Culm-sheath blade inconspicuous, or linear (1). Ligule an eciliate membrane. Leaf-blade base with a brief petiole-like connection to sheath. Leaf-blades lanceolate, or oblong (1), or ovate (1). Leaf-blade midrib evident (1/1). Leaf-blade venation without cross veins (2), or with distinct cross veins (1).

INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence composed of racemes (1/1); terminal and axillary (1/1).

Racemes single (1/1); paucilateral (1/1); bearing few fertile spikelets (1/1); bearing 2–4 fertile spikelets on each (1/1).

Spikelets solitary (1/1). Fertile spikelets pedicelled (1/1).

FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 3–6 fertile florets (1/1); with diminished florets at the apex (1/1). Spikelets linear (1/1); laterally compressed (1/1); 25–30–35 mm long; breaking up at maturity (1/1); disarticulating below each fertile floret (1/1). Rhachilla internodes definite (1/1).

GLUMES Glumes two (1/1), or several (1/1); persistent (1/1); shorter than spikelet (1/1). Lower glume lanceolate (1/1); membranous (1/1); 1-keeled (1/1). Lower glume surface without pits (1/1). Lower glume apex acute (1/1). Upper glume ovate (1/1); membranous (1/1); without keels (1/1); 3–5 -veined (1/1). Upper glume surface pilose (1/1). Upper glume apex acute (1/1).

FLORETS Fertile lemma ovate (1/1); membranous (1/1); without keel (1/1); wingless (1/1); 9–11 -veined (1/1). Lemma lateral veins prominent (1/1). Lemma surface unwrinkled (1/1); without grooves (1/1). Lemma apex acute (1/1). Palea 1 length of lemma. Palea keels ciliolate (1/1). Apical sterile florets resembling fertile though underdeveloped (1/1).

FLOWER Lodicules 3 (1/1); ciliate (1/1). Anthers 6 (1/1). Stigmas 3 (1/1). Ovary umbonate (1/1); pubescent on apex (1/1).

FRUIT Caryopsis with adherent pericarp (1/1).

DISTRIBUTION Temperate Asia (1), or Tropical Asia.
