HABIT Perennial. Rhizomes short; pachymorph. Culms erect (1/2), or leaning (1/2); 400–550–800 cm long; woody; without nodal roots. Culm-internodes terete. Lateral branches dendroid. Culm-sheaths persistent (1/1); without auricles (1), or auriculate (2). Culm-sheath blade ovate (1/2), or triangular (1/2); narrower than sheath (1/1). Leaf-sheath auricles absent (1), or falcate (2). Ligule an eciliate membrane. Leaf-blade base with a brief petiole-like connection to sheath. Leaf-blades lanceolate, or ovate (1); stiff (1), or firm (2).

INFLORESCENCE Synflorescence bractiferous (2/2); clustered at the nodes (2/2); in untidy tufts (2/2); with glumaceous subtending bracts (1/2), or spathaceous subtending bracts (1/2); with axillary buds at base of spikelet (2/2).

FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 6–8 fertile florets (1/2), or 10 fertile florets (1/2); without rhachilla extension (1/2), or with diminished florets at the apex (1/2). Spikelets lanceolate (1/2), or ovate (1/2); laterally compressed (2/2); 10–12.09–15.6 mm long; breaking up at maturity (2/2); disarticulating below each fertile floret (2/2). Rhachilla internodes definite (2/2).

GLUMES Glumes two (1/2), or several (1/2); persistent (2/2); shorter than spikelet (2/2). Lower glume surface without pits (2/2). Upper glume ovate (1/1); 5–7 -veined (1/1). Upper glume apex acute (1/1); mucronate (1/1).

FLORETS Fertile lemma ovate (2/2); without keel (2/2); wingless (2/2). Lemma surface unwrinkled (2/2); without grooves (2/2); glabrous (1/2), or hispidulous (1/2). Lemma margins ciliate (2/2). Lemma apex acute (2/2); mucronate (1/2), or awned (1/2); 1 -awned (1/1). Palea 6–8 -veined (1/1). Palea keels ciliolate (2/2). Apical sterile florets resembling fertile though underdeveloped (1/1).

FLOWER Lodicules absent (2/2). Anthers 6 (2/2). Stigmas 3 (2/2). Ovary umbonate (2/2); pubescent on apex (1/2), or pubescent all over (1/2).

FRUIT Caryopsis with adherent pericarp (1/1).

DISTRIBUTION Tropical Asia, or Australasia (1), or Pacific (1).
