HABIT Perennial. Rhizomes absent (1), or elongated (1). Culms erect; 60–77.5–100 cm long. Ligule a ciliolate membrane.

INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence a panicle.

Panicle open.

Spikelets appressed (1/1); solitary. Fertile spikelets pedicelled. Pedicels clavate (1/1); tip cupuliform (1/1).

FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 1 basal sterile florets; 1 fertile florets; without rhachilla extension. Spikelets lanceolate (1), or elliptic (1); dorsally compressed; 3–3.625–4 mm long; falling entire.

GLUMES Glumes one the lower absent or obscure, or two (1); reaching apex of florets; thinner than fertile lemma. Lower glume linear (1/1); 0.15 length of upper glume; hyaline (1/1). Lower glume surface without pits (1/1). Upper glume lanceolate; membranous; without keels; 3–4 -veined (1), or 5 -veined, or 6–7 -veined (1). Upper glume lateral veins without ribs (1), or ribbed (1). Upper glume surface pilose (1), or villous (1). Upper glume apex acute.

FLORETS Basal sterile florets barren; without significant palea. Lemma of lower sterile floret linear (1), or lanceolate (1); membranous; 3–4 -veined (1), or 5 -veined, or 6–7 -veined (1); without ribs (1), or ribbed (1); acute. Fertile lemma ovate; dorsally compressed; cartilaginous; much thinner above; much thinner on margins; without keel; wingless. Lemma lateral veins obscure (1/1). Lemma surface unwrinkled; without grooves. Lemma margins eciliate (1), or ciliolate (1). Lemma apex acute. Palea gaping; 1 length of lemma; cartilaginous.

FLOWER Anthers 3.
